Although we all want a large family bathroom, it is not always possible. Many people have small family bathrooms or have used space from their bedrooms to install an ensuite, so they are limited in space.
We'll be sharing some tips to create the illusion that space exists, even though there's not much.
All light or all darkness?
This is a proven interior design tip: Use light colours in small rooms to make them feel larger. This is why bathroom decor is so often white.
If you feel a bit more adventurous, you can go completely opposite and choose a dark colour scheme. If the colours are glossy and paired with the correct lighting and mirroring, blacks and dark greys can create a feeling of depth and space. Dark colours can create a sense of space, but you might do it differently.
Multiple mirrors
Mirrors can reflect light and give the illusion of space, as you may already know. It can be easy to forget that a large mirror in a room is not a gateway to another area of the house, but it simply mirrors the space.
This can be used to your advantage in a small bathroom. A mirror wall can open up the space, but if that is impossible, you can hang a few mirrors to achieve the same effect.
You can make the mirror behind the basin look larger and more spacious by having it backlit.
Removing traditional doors
A walking shower is an excellent way to maximize the space in a small bathroom. A small fixed or translucent screen, or even glass blocks, can look great and let the light through.
Consider installing a pocket door instead of having the bathroom door swing into the room on hinges. Pocket doors slide effortlessly across the wall and disappear into it, creating the illusion that there is more space.
No clutter
Small bathrooms can feel larger by cleverly using storage. You can display more in larger bathrooms, but smaller rooms can't.
A basin integrated into a storage unit gives you a clean line and a place to put your things. Mirror cabinets are a slimline storage option that reflects light back into the room. Other options for maximising floor space include floating sinks and hidden cisterns.
Your bathroom will benefit greatly from creative storage solutions.
